MANCHESTER AMATEUR GAMING LEAGUE // Thursday 24th March

  • Chapeltown Picture House (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join us for Manchester’s first amateur gaming league! It’s a pub quiz vibe with a gaming angle! Form your team of four pals and head down to sit in our cinema playing the best video games out there on our absolutely stellar cinema screen and gut churning sound system vying to beat out 11 other teams of gaming nerds in a series of mystery console and PC based challenges. This IS NOT a serious gaming tournament, this is a chance to bring back the glory days of couch gaming on an epic scale. We’re in it for the fun of it.

BUT HOW DOES IT ACTUALLY WORK?!

Book your team in using the links at the bottom of this page, turn up on the night at 7pm sharp to register your team, 7.30pm the first round begins and a random team will be up first having no idea what the first game will be, 7.31pm the game is revealed and the team will need to decide who from their team is going to be nominated to play, the rest of the teams jump on the couch and we play through the round, rinse and repeat for round 2 & 3, points are allocated for each round so at the end of the night a winning team will be crowned! IT’S AS SIMPLE AS THAT!

WHAT GAMES WILL WE BE PLAYING?

Who knows! What we can tell you is that we’ll be bringing games from the past 50 years right up to absolutely brand spanking new releases, there will be time trials, there will be high score battles, there will be head to head battles, there will be weird controllers, there will be blockbusters, there will be left field indie games and you won’t know what the games are until the very second the round begins.

I’M A CHILD CAN I COME ALONG?

Nope. This is a strictly adult event and no children will be admitted. Sorry about that.

Dir. Jamie Yuan, UK, 2022, 30 min

Trailer: https://youtu.be/Kioe6SD-X6g

Produced by mental health nurse Gemma Jennison and Directed by Jamie Yuan, Man Down is a timely, insightful and moving documentary. The film shares the voices of men throughout the industry via their courageous, deeply personal first-person testimony. Each of these stories is a testimony to personal battles with mental health and wellbeing within the challenges of a turbulent industry. Yuan’s film takes a close, compassionate look at the causes of their struggles and asks why men, in particular, find it so hard to open up. Featuring contributions and music from artists including Rag & Bone Man and members of Portishead and IDLES, among others, Man Down aims to break the cycle of silence.

Film sponsored by Stacked Out Entertainment & Ebuyer.com

Here at CPH we’re thrilled to be hosting a day in celebration of the greatest action star of all time, “The Governator” himself, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER.

Our HOUSE OF SCHWARZENEGGER event will feature some of Arnie’s most explosive and iconic films. We will be kicking things off with the fantasy epic that first suggested the Austrian Oak’s star power, CONAN THE BARBARIAN. We’ll be following this up Paul Verhoeven’s insane sci-fi masterpiece, TOTAL RECALL. After a short break (to recover) we’ll be back with the unbridled chaos of COMMANDO before closing out the day with the brand new 4k release of PREDATOR. Trust us, you’ll never have seen this classic in as excellent a quality as you will at our all-dayer.

Because we know there’s plenty of Arnie fanatics out there, we’re offering a limited supply of ALL-DAY PASSES, but you better get them quick before they say “hasta la vista baby”.

THE LINE-UP:

The brainchild of comedians Jack Lewis Evans and Sean Morley, Mandatory Redistribution Party (or Mandos to its loyal listenership) began life in July of 2019 and has gone from strength to strength. Sean and Jack have covered everything from NFTs to tulpas, with wit and a depth that has led them down some very dangerous paths, none more so than when Sean dug deeper on Richard Branson’s part in his own lineage.

This live version of the pod, entitled ‘Hostile Takeover’, is a live comedy experience of left-wing lore and repartee that looks at the big ideas influencing the past and future of radical politics. PEACE BY CHOCOLATE

Year: 2021

Runtime: 96 min

Language: Arabic, English, Subtitles in English

After the bombing of his father's chocolate factory, a charming young Syrian refugee struggles to settle into his new small-town life, caught between following his dream and preserving his family's legacy.

In this UK premier, we invite you to join us in paying tribute to Hatem Ali, an influential filmmaker, writer, and actor who passed away in exile in December 2020 at the age of 58. This film is his last work.

Trailer: https://youtu.be/JWD3hKJnucc

Ticket philosophy

We are committed to making Celebrating Syria accessible to everyone. For each ticketed event three different prices are available, following the ‘solidarity economy’ approach. The highest price is intended for high waged, the middle price for medium waged and the lowest price (always £1) for low waged or unwaged. This means you can choose the price that suits you. By choosing a higher price, if you can afford it, you are supporting the festival and enabling lower earners to attend festival events. We base our ticketing structure on trust, so no evidence of income is required.

As usual, asylum seekers can attend all events for free. If you require free tickets, please contact [email protected] or on 0161 222 9779.

SUBMERGE FESTIVAL 2022 PRESENTS: QUEER JAPAN (with artist Q&A)

QUEER JAPAN (2019)

Director: Graham Kolbeins

Running Time: 99 minutes

About QUEER JAPAN:

Trailblazing artists, activists, and everyday people from across the spectrum of gender and sexuality defy social norms and dare to live unconventional lives in this kaleidoscopic view of LGBTQ+ culture in contemporary Japan. From shiny pride parades to playfully perverse underground parties,

Queer Japan pictures people living brazenly unconventional lives in the sunlight, the shadows, and everywhere in between. Dazzling, iconoclastic drag queen Vivienne Sato peels back the layers of language and identity. Maverick manga artist Gengoroh Tagame tours the world with his unapologetically erotic gay comics. Councilwoman Aya Kamikawa recounts her rocky path to becoming the first transgender elected official in Japan. At legendary kink-positive hentai party Department H, non-binary performance artist Saeborg uses rubber to create a second skin.

Culled from 100+ interviews conducted over 3 years in locations across Japan, Queer Japan features dozens of individuals sharing their experiences in their own words. Get to know a vibrant and inspiring group of human beings in a country with a unique history of queer expression.

Artist Q&A (from 4pm):

Following the screening, Dr Mark Pendleton will hosts a Q&A conversation with star of the film Saeborg and an invited panel. The artist will discuss their thoughts on contemporary feminism in Japan, and their unique take on gender and sexuality.

Saeborg is the artist behind Pigpen, presented as part of Submerge Festival at SEESAW. Her acclaimed performances present nightmarish configurations of gigantic playmobils in bizarre fairytale settings.

In Saeborg’s world, the lives of livestock (their procreative activity, the delivery of their offspring and the slaughterhouse) are portrayed with a cartoonish and innocent cheerfulness. Saeborg’s performances broadly sit within queer feminist notions, referring to the processes women and their bodies are pressured to endure.

About Submerge:

Taking place from the 8th to 27th, Submerge Festival is a meeting point for innovative performance, music and digital culture. We’ll unleash a tidal wave of international artists throughout the streets, clubs, and emblematic venues of the city, turning every corner into a playground for wild ideas.

20th CENTURY WOMEN (2016)

Director: Mike Mills

Running Time: 118 mins

Rating: 15

In 1979 Santa Barbara, a determined single mother in her mid-50s is raising her adolescent son, Jamie, at a moment brimming with cultural change and rebellion. Dorothea enlists the help of two younger women, Abbie, a free-spirited punk artist living as a boarder in the Fields' home and Julie, a savvy and provocative teenage neighbour to help with Jamie's upbringing.

Featuring music from the Talking Heads + Black Flag, starring Greta Gerwig, Elle Fanning and Annette Bening and drenched in mid-century eye candy, 20th Century Women is not only an exploration of what it means to be a mother but a cultural odyssey with its themes (and reference) parallel to 1982 environmental masterpiece Koyaanisqatsi.

LONG STORY SHORT x LASS FEST

  • Chapeltown Picture House (map)

An Open Mic Storytelling Event hosted by Simone the Resident Natterbox.

Expect an honest, unpretentious evening of exchange. Driven by a theme of the month inspired by true stories unfolding in the world however big or small. You will leave with a dollop of wholesome heart-warming connection with a bunch of strangers with a side-order of amusement at the stories shared and a recognition of how connected we all really are.

A one off special for LASS FEST.

Theme of the Month: WOMEN. It's International Women's Day and it's only fitting we celebrate the females in our lives.

Story Line Prompters: Tell us tales on the lasses that shaped you, made you, even broke you. Let's celebrate all those women in your life that you have formed a relationship with whether that be your Grandmothers, Mothers, Sisters, Daughters, Wives, Aunties, Best Female Friends, Female Bosses. Tell us the funny snippets of their wisdom, their individual quirks, their inspiring talks. Their fierce actions and how that influenced you.

How it works: One set theme and an acknowledgement that there is two types of people in the world.

The Storytellers: You have five minutes of fame. Five minutes to tell the long story of the short tale. Let it be powerful. Let it be punchy. Let it be your authentically yours to tell. The interpretation of the theme is yours to own and can be delivered in any communication form you feel comfortable with (Storytelling/Spoken Word/Poetry/Singing/comedy/drag queens).

The Listeners: Our crowd. If you’re only here for the entertainment then your in the right place! Expect this to be part confessional, part comedic, part therapeutic. This evening is not staged, these are just everyday folk like you and I that have the confidence to share their experience with you. Our only rule is be present, be respectful of others and give them a hearty applause upon sharing! The beauty of this evening, is you really don’t know how the evening will evolve and that’s what makes it so exciting.

There are to strangers here, only friends you haven't met yet. Long Story Short wants to create a environment which is open to all. Each of us, unique yet relatable. Weird yet wonderful. The fish to the chips of life. Gobble up that feeling and let's form a community.

”As a contagion befalls Great Britain, and millions reflect upon the meaning of their lives, a grieving English teacher attempts to recover fragments of his shattered self as a boy, as a youth and as a man amidst the cathedrals, canals and crevices of Greater Manchester.”

After a packed house on 15th January 2022, this second screening event is an excellent opportunity for independent and student filmmakers, writers, actors, performers and cinephiles to not only watch a truly unique independent Manchester-based film production, but also to socialise and network with the film's cast and crew and, more importantly, with each other.

Launching on 17th February, Adult Film Club is an evening of raucous peepery curated by Chris Cantrill (BBC 2’s Alma’s Not Normal and Edinburgh Fringe ‘Best Show’ nominated double act, The Delightful Sausage) and the rising star of Manchester’s comedy filmmaking scene, Sam O’Leary (he’s done some music videos for Sony who are a media company who make music, movies, video games consoles and video games).

Together they have curated a selection of some of the most exciting comedy shorts starring smashers such as Jamie Demetriou (Stath Lets Flats), Peter Serafinowicz (Dark Souls II) and Jain Edwards (C4). There’ll also be shorts from creators such as Joe Roberts and Karl Poyzer, Alan Resnick and The Minute Hour. There might even be some stuff from two cheeky, chubby little boys called Sam and Chris. This is a great chance for Manchester’s filmmakers to showcase their wares and network with like-minded troubled souls.

A Lovely Time returns to Chapletown Picture House on 5th February 2022 with another hilarious night featuring the most exciting comedians around. As always, A Lovely Time is hosted by comedy powerhouse Amy Gledhill (Alma’s Not Normal, BBC 2) who’s got another amazing lineup for the lucky people of Manchester.

To kick 2022 off in style, we’ve got comedy legend Kiri Pritchard-McLean (“Passionate, smart and yes, bloody funny” - The Scotsman). Kiri is a host of the hit podcast All Killa No Filla as well as her very own show on BBC Radio Wales. You’ll have also seen her on ALL OF THE TV including Richard Ayoade’s Question Team and Would I Lie To You

Kiri’s joined by sketch comedy goliaths, Tarot (‘Bark out loud funny...the whole show is startlingly live’ ★★★★ Guardian) and rising star of BBC 2's Funny Festival Live, Tadiwa Mahlunge.
The next gag-packed edition of A Lovely Time starts at 7pm on Saturday 5th February 2022. A Lovely Time’s host Amy Gledhill said, “We’re back baby! And with a lineup this hot you’re going to need to call the fire service! Don’t though, I’m being hyperbolic to whip up enthusiasm and hopefully sell more tickets.”

GREY LANTERN x ABOVE THE LINE PRESENTS: BOY HARSHER 'THE RUNNER' FILM SCREENING

  • Chapeltown Picture House (map)

Boy Harsher’s fifth release is not a traditional album — it’s the musical counterpart to a short film written, produced, and directed by the duo, entitled The Runner, which will be released alongside the album in January 2022. The Runner is a horror film intercut with a meta-style “documentary” about Boy Harsher’s recording process. The soundtrack balances cinematic instrumentals with pop songs that push the boundaries of Boy Harsher’s sound. We're delighted to present a screening of it with our pals Above The Line.

CHROMA CRYSTAL PRESENTS: DIAL CODE SANTA CLAUS

  • Chapeltown Picture House (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Previously only available via VHS bootlegs and a huge audience slayer since its debut at Fantastic Fest, DIAL CODE SANTA CLAUS (aka 3615 CODE PÈRE NOËL and DEADLY GAMES) is your new favourite holiday slay ride. Thomas is a typical 1980s kid: he loves computers, role-playing games, and his dog. While mom is away at the office on Christmas Eve, Thomas and his grandfather are left home alone -- perfect timing for a disgruntled, perverted, bloodthirsty Santa Claus to raid the home down the chimney. But Hell hath no fury like a mulleted ten-year-old with an arsenal of toys! Made a year before HOME ALONE, the French-made DIAL CODE SANTA CLAUS has almost the same plot -- only filled with more style, bloodshed, and Rambo references.

“Plays like a blend of classic Amblin and a grindhouse nightmare."

“To say this s#!t is nuts is an understatement"

Special Video Introduction from René Manzor (TBC)

Please book tickets in advance as seats on the door are not guaranteed, and pre-bookings cover the cost to run the event.

Manchester’s best and weirdest comedians present The Jain Edwards Show, billed simply, and accurately, as ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’. Fronted by Rhyl’s best, hardest entertainer Jain Edwards, this is an alternative comedy chat show where anything can and will happen.

Co-produced by new Manchester comedy production house A Lovely Time, the show will feature bizarre characters, mind-altering songs and wild happenings - all these and more brought to you by your charming and powerful host. Housed at Chapeltown Picture House in Grub’s new Green Quarter home, The Jain Edwards Show is a multimedia extravaganza like no other.

About Jain Edwards

Jain Edwards has been entertaining and confounding the audiences of Manchester’s alternative circuit for years with her offbeat charm and wonderful cast of absurd characters. She has appeared on BBC3, Channel 4 and is often seen pumping iron as Top Bodybuilder Brian.

Praise for Jain:

  • “Pleasingly offbeat” - The Guardian

  • “Edwards succeeds with levity, charm and a knowing smile” - The List

How helpful is development aid from the Global North?  In crisis-ridden eastern Congo, three European development aid workers are forced to question what it means to help.

Raúl, a French-Spanish economist doing research on rebel groups, realises that he is leading his Congolese colleagues into great temptation with his project funds, putting their study at risk of failing. After 30 years in Africa, Peter, from Germany, reaches retirement age and is unable to renew his job contract. He struggles to stay in Congo and to preserve his identity as an aid worker. And the relationship of Anne-Laure, from Belgium, is put to the test when her Congolese boyfriend, after a stay in prison, becomes a high-profile regime critic.

Deeply personal insights into coexistence and cooperation between Europe and Africa—and the question: how helpful is the help of the West?

LONG STORY SHORT: CHRISTMAS SPECIAL

  • Chapeltown Picture House (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

An Open Mic Storytelling Event hosted by Simone the Resident Natterbox.

Expect an honest, unpretentious evening of exchange. Driven by a theme of the month inspired by true stories unfolding in the world however big or small. You will leave with a dollop of wholesome heart-warming connection with a bunch of strangers with a side-order of amusement at the stories shared and a recognition of how connected we all really are.

Theme of the Month: Favourite's

Story Line Prompters: We all have our favourites. That's why we call some people our best friends and some just our friends! In seriousness, we want to hear all the happy stories. All your favourite stories and why. Set the scene, bring those memories to life. We don't care where, when, who, what with. Let's all bask in the joy because Christmas is ultimately about spreading a sprinkle of joy, right?

An open mic for sharing experience, to help us understand in some form or other that we're all the same, and that similarity may allow someone who hears your tale to recall some of their own and keep spreading that joy organically.

Tickets are listed at a guide price of £5.00 for Listeners and FREE for Storytellers.

If you would like to perform please email [email protected] and a ballot will be drawn the week of the 10th November and you will be subsequently notified if successful.

How it works.

One set theme and an acknowledgement that there is two types of people in the world.

****Walk ins are welcome subject to space capacity and safe social distances guidelines met. ****
